戦後、自民党、官僚、大企業の「鉄のトライアングル」ならぬ鉄の四角形を占めてきた記者クラブ。

１世紀の歴史を持つ大手マスコミのカルテル組織。政府の建物の中に陣取り、外国メディアや非会員の記者たちを締め出し、取材機会を独占し、国民寄りというよりは官庁寄りの記事を書いていると、長い間批判されてきた。

亀井大臣が非会員にも会見をオープンにするよう記者クラブに提案したが断られ、記者クラブ向けと、その他ジャーナリスト向けと、２つの会見を続けて開くことになった。

大臣は、先の記者クラブ向けの会見をそそくさと切りあげ、後のその他ジャーナリスト向けの会見はカジュアルな雰囲気のなかで話題も広範囲に及んだようだ。

プレスクラブの閉鎖性に対するメンバーの言い訳は、「会見中に訳のわからん奴が入って来て焼身自殺でもされたらだれが責任を取るんだ。」と歯切れが悪い。

だが、新政権になって一部、記者会見が開放されたとは言え、まだ４省のみ。首相の記者会見にしてもまだ開放されていない。今後の進展が待たれるところだ。プレスクラブ自体も変わらざるを得ないだろう。
